Over the last year, DANCOP has made significant strides in supporting D/deaf learners at Royal School for the Deaf, Derby (RSDD), equipping learners with essential skills and knowledge to navigate their educational and career journeys. Through a series of focused sessions, we aimed to empower these students, enhance their confidence, and broaden their horizons.
Pathways to HE Programme
Navigating the transition from secondary and tertiary education to higher education can be daunting, especially for D/deaf learners. Our dedicated programme, Pathways to HE addressed these concerns head-on, aiming to provide learners with all the information, advice and guidance to make informed choices for the future.
We provided detailed information on the various options available, from vocational courses to university degrees. Learners were introduced to resources, application processes, and the support systems in place for D/deaf students at higher education institutions. By demystifying the journey ahead, we aimed to ensure that every participant felt informed and ready to take the next step in their academic careers.
University Campus Visits
To complement our sessions, we organised visits to two University of Derby campuses, providing learners with a first-hand experience of university life. This opportunity allowed learners to explore facilities, meet current students, and ask questions about university life as a D/deaf student.
These visits helped to illustrate the university experience and reinforced the message that higher education is accessible to all. Learners left inspired and excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
CV and Interview Skills Sessions
Alongside the Pathways to HE programme, we offered bespoke CV and interview skills sessions. We also discussed Access to Work information, informing learners about their right to be supported in the workplace and how to advocate for their individual needs.
Role Model Workshop with a Theatre Company
Our collaboration with Graeae Theatre Company brought a vibrant and creative angle to our strategic programme. Workshops were held with learners at RSDD and Allestree Woodlands school, led by Jenny Sealey, artistic director of Graeae Theatre Company. The workshops aimed to inspire the learners by engaging them in interactive activities that encouraged self-expression and confidence. The opportunity to learn more about Jenny’s journey as a Deaf professional in the arts helped challenge stereotypes about what D/deaf individuals can achieve. The workshop not only inspired confidence in the learners’ abilities but also nurtured a strong sense of pride in their D/deaf identity, encouraging learners to embrace who they are and pursue their aspirations.
Conclusion
As we move forward, we remain committed to supporting D/deaf learners, ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in their educational and career aspirations.
An area of focus for the future is supporting D/deaf learners to access work experience, internship and apprenticeship opportunities. We encourage local D/deaf and SEND friendly employers in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to get in touch to discuss future partnerships.
