17/03/2025 Weekly Round Up

We’ve had a busy week delivering across our schools and colleges! Here are our highlights:

At the start of the week we welcomed our brilliant UniConnect South Yorkshire neighbours HeppSY to the University of Derby as part of their HE Can programme. 40 year 9 learners found out about HE life and got a tour of the Kedleston Road campus in some glorious spring sunshine! The learners asked fantastic questions and had some brilliant ideas for their own student societies.

We finished our Steps to Success programme at Newark Academy, where year 10 worked on their resilience and goal setting. It was fantastic for Karolina to see the range of careers the learners wanted to go into, and we wish them all the best of luck in their journey.

At Nottingham College Clifton All Whites, learners took part in week three of the Learn to Work programme with. They looked at employability and transferrable skills as well as searching for apprenticeship vacancies and the importance of having an up-to-date CV!

We welcomed learners at the University of Derby for the Science in the City event led by the University of Derby Widening Participation Team. We were absolutely overwhelmed with the enthusiasm, creativity and confidence demonstrated in the student voice sessions that we ran. We had posters, poems, song lyrics and even rap performances that all illustrated how much of an important topic this is to our young people. A huge thank you to all the schools involved and also to the fantastic Derby College ambassadors that supported the sessions.

We returned to Nottingham College where learners on the Lead the Way programme took part in their second session with Hollie, we looked at the importance of teamwork and assigning roles to their project teams.

Following on from yesterday’s Science in the City event, Monica and Matthew supported the University of Derby Widening Participation team for an evening of interactive climate change focused fun at Derby Theatre. Not only were we entertained by the fantastic duo Justin Time and Dr Noah Alot, aka Ian Turner and Chris Ribchester, the fantastic Future Creatives from the CANVAS project performed on the main stage. A wonderful, thought-provoking evening demonstrating fantastic collaboration across Derby city.

Learners at Buxton & Leek College based at the University of Derby engaged in a session on HE & Pathways with Natalie.

We finished the week with Monica at the University of Derby as part of the National Saturday Club, looking at career pathways after exploring personal motivation, skills and experience the week before. The group demonstrated some excellent critical thinking skills and we were particularly impressed by the discussion on understanding choices post- 16.
