Looking back on last week, here are our highlights:
We started the week at with our Learn to Work programme at Kirk Hallam Community Academy. Learners from year 12 & 13 started their week of with session two and broke down CVs, application forms, and the STAR technique to help them understand what is needed on their apprenticeship journey. By the end of the session, they had already written their own STAR example ready for their next applications!
We returned to Shirebrook Academy, where learners on the Prepare to Succeed programme explored different revision techniques and “pitched” them to each other. Natalie was so impressed with the pitching techniques of the groups!
At Newark Academy, two groups of Year 10 started the Steps to Success programme with Karolina. We looked at metacognition and the process of plan, do, review.
At Kirk Hallam Community Academy, learners took part in the final session of Lead the Way. The learners delivered their presentations of their projects and outcomes. There were some detailed answers, and it was great to hear the depth that they had included. Now it’s their turn to use what they have learned in the EPQs!
We visited the Garibaldi school, where learners on the Get Ready programme worked with Tina on their resilience skills.
Natalie, Matt and Hollie visited Springwell Community College to start the Prepare to Succeed Revision Programme with year 11 learners. Learners learnt all about the “revision journey” and using this to break down revision into steps.
Karolina returned to Samworth Church Academy to finish the Learn to Work programme. Year 12 had a go at an assessment centre task and each had a turn being interviewed by their peers to practice the STAR technique. Wishing them all the luck in applying for apprenticeships!
Funded by DANCOP, Human Utopia visited Parkside School to continue to work with the year 11 students. This built on the work that Human Utopia had delivered to the students in September 2024, focussing on confidence, resilience and aspirations for their future.
Our learners on the Supported Insight Scheme visited the University of Derby Union of Student’s Shop based on site at Kedleston Road and learnt about how the shop is ran. Learners also stacked lots of crisps on to the shelves! On a busy day the shop can sell up to 400 packets a day! A big thank you to Ibrahim for organising and hosting us.
Natalie had a visit to Parkside School’s Parents Evening talking to year 11 learners and their parents about next steps for their education and future careers. She also delivered the Goal-setting and self-efficacy session to the learners from the Steps to Success programme.
