Weekly Round Up 09/12/2024

Here are our highlights from last week:

We had a busy day at Newark Academy. Year 13 learners worked on their revision skills, looking at the story method and blurting technique. Meanwhile, year 12 learners discussed resilience and practised different resilience techniques, such as reframing.

Karolina continued the year 12 Get Ready programme at The Brunts Academy where learners looked at communication skills. It was nice to get everyone involved and talking first thing in the morning!

We returned to The Dukeries Academy, where learners on the Learn to Work programme discussed CVs and applications before looking at some examples of apprenticeship vacancies. Looking forward to seeing how they do during the assessment centre next week!

Our Learn to Work programme also visited Landau Forte College Derby on a lovely sunny morning. Year 11 learners reflected on applications they have already submitted for apprenticeships and thought about upcoming applications. They discussed CV structure and considered how to structure supporting statements. It was brilliant to hear about applications learners have already made and that they all already have CVs!

We visited Springwell Community College, where learners on the Steps to Success programme focused on critical thinking. Tina had a great time with the learners exploring their decisions around who to save in a zombie apocalypse and how critical thinking is a vital skill for both their education and their future careers.

Karolina also headed over for an after-school session of the Prepare to Succeed programme at The Bulwell Academy, where year 11s focused on different revision techniques. It was amazing to see them not only use the story technique but write poems and rhymes to remember things such as the photosynthesis cycle.

At Nottingham College High Pavement campus, learners explored employability and transferable skills as part of the Learn to Work programme. We practiced structuring answers to questions about different employability and transferrable skills, something that will be beneficial for both applications and interviews.

We also ran a UCAS personal statement drop-in surgery, it was a pleasure to read about the interests, skills and experiences of year 13 A level students and to see the progress they have made on these over the past few weeks.

Karolina returned to The Bulwell Academy for another session with year 10, focusing on revision. We discussed how important time and space is for revision, then used the story technique to remember data sets.

At Derby College, learners on the Learn to Work programme participated in a session focussed on their transferable skills and employability qualities with Natalie. Natalie was impressed by the wealth of skills and qualities the group had!

We finished the week with our Steps to Success programme at Parkside School, where we talked all things revision ahead of the year 11 mock exams next week. Good luck!
